Convento de Sandelgas - most special wedding venue in Coimbra

Over the course of 19 years we have held more than 750 events, mostly weddings, with grooms of various nationalities such as Germans, English, French, Dutch, Americans, Brazilians, Norwegians, Italians, Spaniards, Austrians and Slovaks.

 

The Convent of Sandelgas, erected in Lower Mondego in the seventeenth century, embraced the nuns of the Third Rule of St. Francis of Assisi.

We are here to hold most amazing wedding - the wedding that you always dreamed of.

 

So strong were his vocations that they obtained from D. Manuel the royal pleasure to impel to Pope Alexander VI a brief to found a convent. The nuns would promise to observe three essential vows: Poverty, Obedience, and Chastity.

The new building of rectangular plant, was torn by multiple windows and doors that contributed to give life to the facade, avoiding the monotony. From the harsh architectural modesty of the building, which in fact met Franciscan poverty, the portal of the church emerges as a hymn of glory to the stone of Ançã, dating back to the third quarter of the 17th century.

To the south of the convent building lay a vast land which was isolated from the outer world by a high wall. The fence, with its gardens and garden strewn with fountains and lakes, was offered to the conventuals as a place of work, leisure, contemplation and prayer. This area, which was undoubtedly timeless, made it a cloister, a pleasant and calm place that allowed it to wander and rest.

In the middle of the leafy cedar grove, not far from the convent, some steps allow access to the so-called nuns' fountain below ground level. A few meters away, stands the fountain of St. John in which a niche with Ionic columns houses the sculpture of the Saint in stone of Ançã. They decorate the fountain wall, plaid tiles from the 17th century. To top off this small architectural ensemble, lies a stone cross.

Weddings

Gone are the days when the wedding had to take place in the registrar’s office. Weddings taking place outside have become increasingly popular recently. Here at Hotel & Garden U Holubu, we are fortunate with truly wonderful setting of our hotel and its surroundings. 

They provide us with unique and a very atmospheric place for your wedding. The wedding ceremony takes place in a stylish summer house which can be decorated with flowers entirely to your taste. The summer house is set in a meadow, just a few steps away from the main Hotel and restaurant, near the woods. It offers comfortable and enjoyable seatting for all present.

After the ceremony, most newlyweds and their guests move indoors to eat. The wedding breakfast will usually be served in our restaurant. The restaurant and furniture within offers various options for the seating arrangements, decorations, music, dancing etc. We are able to cater for you to have your wedding feast outside, too. It is less formal, relaxed and very romantic. 

Everybody is able to enjoy themselves, talk to others, children don’t get bored. We are obviously prepared and equipped in the case of poor weather (sun, wind, rain). The outside terrace is also a pleasant place to relax and enjoy the wedding after the main formal part has taken place.

What if it rains? In that case we have a ‘rainy day’ option ready for you. The ceremony would take place in our winter garden which will be beautifully decorated, offering a romantic atmosphere.
